On 8th May 1945, Britain awoke to a new dawn. The war in Europe was over. After nearly six years of bombings, rationing and heartache, church bells rang in celebration, crowds filled the streets, and from the balcony of the Ministry of Health, Churchill’s words echoed across the capital: “This is your hour”.
Whilst we hang bunting and fly union jacks, we must remember that VE Day remains a solemn moment of reflection, honouring the service, courage, and resilience of all who fought, supported, and endured, across ALL nations. I for one will not be drawn into any debate about which contributed more. ALL nations, many religions, and so many men came together to defend our way of life and freedoms.
Today I am proud. Today I am humbled. Tomorrow I will carry a little bit more fighting spirit in my heart to protect at all costs, what we love and value.
